Frequently asked questions

FAQS

HOW DOES MY INSURANCE WORK?

Depending on your current health insurance provider or employee benefit plan, it is possible for services to be covered in full or in part. Please contact your provider to verify how your plan compensates you for psychotherapy services. Read more under "Why Pay out of Pocket when I have insurance?"

We recommend asking these questions to your insurance provider to help determine your benefits:

  • Does my health insurance plan include mental health benefits?

  • Do I have a deductible? If so, what is it and have I met it yet?

  • Does my plan limit how many sessions per calendar year I can have? If so, what is the limit?

  • Do I need written approval from my primary care physician in order for services to be covered?

  • Do I have Out of Network benefits?

DOES INSURANCE COVER COUPLES COUNSELING?

Insurance does not cover couples counseling. Insurance requires that an individual diagnosis be given in order to cover treatment. When treating a couple the need is not a medical diagnosis. Health insurance is intended to address cost associated with managing symptoms of a condition, illness, or disorder, so one person must meet criteria for a medical diagnosis. With couples counseling "the client" is the couple.

WHY PAY OUT OF POCKET WHEN I HAVE INSURANCE?

With insurance, many times there is a yearly out-of-pocket expense (DEDUCTIBLE) that must be met before your insurance will kick in and cover any treatment. For many insurance plans, If you have not met your deductible, you will most likely be responsible for paying the full fee for the service received. This fee is yours even if the provider is within your network.

Insurance companies require an official diagnosis in order to cover your therapy. Based on your diagnosis and insurance plan, your insurance company can decide how many therapy sessions will be covered; rather you and the therapist planning treatment together. Paying out of pocket gives you complete privacy and control over your treatment in terms of format and frequency.

HOW LONG DOES EACH THERAPY SESSION TAKE?

Typically, counseling sessions are 50-60 minutes.
